As a seasoned pilot, I'm no stranger to the physical demands of my profession. We often talk about combatting jet lag, staying hydrated, and maintaining focus during long flights, but one aspect that frequently gets overlooked is the health of our lower extremities.
In January, a nurse friend recommended that I try wearing compression socks during flights. At first, the suggestion surprised me – aren't compression socks for athletes, the elderly, or those with certain medical conditions? However, after using them for over six months now, I can personally attest to their benefits.
First, a quick introduction: Compression socks or stockings are designed to apply pressure to your lower legs, helping to maintain blood flow, and reduce discomfort and swelling. They're usually worn by those at risk of circulation problems, such as DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis), varicose veins, or diabetes.
Now, you might be wondering: How do compression socks help pilots? Let's dive in.
Improved Circulation: Flying, particularly long-haul or transcon flights, mean extended periods of inactivity. Sitting for hours can affect the body's ability to pump blood from the legs back to the heart. Compression socks provide graduated compression, strongest at the ankle and decreasing towards the top of the sock, to promote better blood flow.
Reduced Risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis: Pilots are at a higher risk of developing DVT due to prolonged sitting. Wearing compression socks can reduce this risk significantly.
Less Leg and Foot Swelling: Ever noticed your feet or ankles getting swollen during or after a flight? That's fluid that accumulates in your legs and feet because of gravity and inactivity. Compression socks help prevent this buildup of fluid, reducing discomfort. My shoes now fit for the entire day...rather than me wondering how they got so small after finishing a 10 hour duty day.
Reduced Fatigue: I've noticed less leg fatigue and more overall energy when wearing compression socks, particularly on longer flights and duty days.
After my friend's recommendation, I decided to try them out and purchased a package of compression socks from Amazon. They've been an absolute game-changer for my flight routine. While they feel very odd to put on at first, these socks provide the right amount of pressure without feeling too tight or uncomfortable, and they're made with a breathable, durable material that stands up to long hours of wear. Once you have them on for 10-15 minutes you forget they are there.

I've been working with the same 8 pairs over the last six months so they are incredibly durable. Honestly, these have probably outlasted the normal black socks I would purchase in bulk from Costco.
For folks that are not crew members reading this, the socks also come in a range of colors so you're sure to find a pair that suits your style.
I'd 5/5 recommend these to any flight crew members sitting or on their feet all day - or to travelers that are sitting on long flights.
